Understanding Korean Syllable Blocks

Korean writing is unique because characters are arranged in square-like blocks called syllables. Each syllable block represents one spoken syllable and always contains:

1 Consonant

At least one consonant (initial sound)

1 Vowel

Exactly one vowel (middle sound)

0-1 Final Consonant

Optional final consonant (final sound)

How Syllables Are Formed

Step 1: Choose a Consonant

Start with any consonant. This will be the initial sound of your syllable.

Step 2: Add a Vowel

ㄱ + ㅏ

Add a vowel. The vowel position determines the syllable's shape.

Step 3: Form the Syllable Block

The result is a syllable block that represents one sound: "ga"

Basic Syllables: ㄱ series (가-하)

Let's learn the most common syllables using different consonants with the vowel ㅏ (a).

ga
ㄱ + ㅏ
na
ㄴ + ㅏ
da
ㄷ + ㅏ
ra
ㄹ + ㅏ
ma
ㅁ + ㅏ
ba
ㅂ + ㅏ
sa
ㅅ + ㅏ
a
ㅇ + ㅏ
ja
ㅈ + ㅏ
cha
ㅊ + ㅏ
ka
ㅋ + ㅏ
ta
ㅌ + ㅏ
pa
ㅍ + ㅏ
ha
ㅎ + ㅏ

Vowel Series: 아-이 (Different Vowels)

Now let's see how the same consonant ㄱ combines with different vowels.

ga
ㄱ + ㅏ
gya
ㄱ + ㅑ
geo
ㄱ + ㅓ
gyeo
ㄱ + ㅕ
go
ㄱ + ㅗ
gyo
ㄱ + ㅛ
gu
ㄱ + ㅜ
gyu
ㄱ + ㅠ
geu
ㄱ + ㅡ
gi
ㄱ + ㅣ

The Final Consonant: 받침 (Batchim)

A syllable block can take one more consonant under the floor: 가 + ㅇ = . This bottom consonant is called 받침 ("support"), and it's what turns "ga" into "gang", "sa" into "san". Click each word to hear it:

gang
river — ㅇ under 가
san
mountain — ㄴ under 사
bap
rice — ㅂ under 바
jip
house — ㅂ under 지
mun
door — ㄴ under 무
gil
road — ㄹ under 기
gom
bear — ㅁ under 고
kkot
flower — ㅊ under 꼬
bak
outside — ㄲ under 바
ap
front — ㅍ under 아

Only 7 sounds can end a syllable

Whatever consonant is written as the 받침, it is pronounced as one of just seven sounds. Click the examples:

Ends likeWritten asExamples
-k ㄱ ㄲ ㅋ
-n
-t ㄷ ㅅ ㅆ ㅈ ㅊ ㅌ ㅎ
-l
-m
-p ㅂ ㅍ
-ng

Note: ㅇ is silent at the start of a syllable (아 = "a") but sounds like "ng" as a 받침 (앙 = "ang").

Syllable Block Patterns

Korean syllables follow specific visual patterns depending on the vowel type:

Vertical Vowels

가 기

ㅏ ㅑ ㅓ ㅕ ㅣ
Consonant + Vowel side by side

Horizontal Vowels

고 구

ㅗ ㅛ ㅜ ㅠ ㅡ
Consonant above Vowel

With Final Consonant

간 공

Final consonant always goes at the bottom
