Hello

Works any time of day, with anyone. Add a small nod.

Yes / No

Koreans also say 네 constantly while listening — it means “I see, go on.”

4

[죄송함니다]joe-song-ham-ni-da

I’m sorry

The most polite apology. Also works for “excuse me” when you bump into someone.

5

jeo-gi-yo

Excuse me! (to get attention)

How you call a server in a restaurant — say it out loud, it is not rude.

8

Where is the restroom?

Swap 화장실 for any place and add 어디예요? to ask where it is.

10

It’s okay / I’m fine / No, thanks

With a little hand wave it politely declines. Said as a question — 괜찮아요? — it asks “Are you OK?”

Getting the most out of these phrases

Say them out loud, not in your head. Play a phrase, pause, and repeat it at the same speed. Then turn on quiz mode and try to produce each phrase from memory before you tap it.

Learn the patterns, not just the sentences. Many phrases are frames you can reuse: ___ 주세요 (please give me ___), ___ 어디예요? (where is ___?), ___ 돼요? (is ___ possible?). Swap in one new noun and you have a new sentence.

Romanization is a crutch — Hangul is faster. Signs, menus and subway maps are all in Hangul. The letters take about an hour to learn, and then you can read every phrase on this page yourself. Start with the letters →
